ChatGPT Has Ads Now. Should Small Contractors Care?
Yes. But that does not mean you should rush in with your credit card.
ChatGPT has ads now.
So, of course, the marketing world is already acting like Google just died.
It did not.
ChatGPT Ads may become a real way to reach homeowners.
But being early and being smart are not the same thing.
What Changed?
OpenAI is now testing ads in ChatGPT.
The ads appear below answers. They are marked as ads and kept apart from what ChatGPT says.
That part matters.
Paying for an ad does not make ChatGPT recommend your company inside its answer.
It buys an ad spot below the answer.
OpenAI says ads may appear for people using the Free and Go plans. Paid plans like Plus, Pro, and Business do not show them.
This Is Not Just Google Ads in a New Box
Google Ads often starts with a search.
“Plumber near me.”
ChatGPT may have a whole talk with the homeowner.
“My water heater is leaking.”
“It is 12 years old.”
“I live near Tampa.”
“Should I fix it or replace it?”
That gives ChatGPT more than a few words.
It gives the full problem.
OpenAI says its ad system may look at the chat, the ad, and the page the ad sends people to when picking what to show. You can read the current ad details here.
That could make these ads very useful.
It could also make them very easy to mess up.
A weak ad with a vague page may not fit the chat.
“Quality service you can trust” is not going to cut it.
Say what you do.
Say where you do it.
Say why someone should call.
Should Small Contractors Jump In?
My honest answer?
Most should care now.
Most should not rush in tomorrow.
ChatGPT Ads are still in beta. OpenAI says there are no broad results to show what good performance looks like yet. That means anyone promising cheap contractor leads is guessing.
Maybe they are right.
Maybe they are selling a dream with a payment link.
We do not know yet.
Big companies can burn piles of money while they learn.
A one-truck company cannot.
That is not fear.
That is common sense.
Fix the Basics Before You Test
Do not add a new ad platform if:
- Your phone goes to voicemail
- Your website is not clear
- Your Google profile looks dead
- Your reviews are old
- Nobody tracks booked jobs
- Leads sit for two days before getting a call
A new ad platform will not fix an old business problem.
It may just help you lose money in a brand-new place.
Before you test ChatGPT Ads, make sure:
- Your main services are clear
- Your service area is clear
- Your job photos are real
- Your reviews build trust
- Your phone gets answered
- You can track calls, estimates, and sold jobs
Then test small.
Do not move half your Google budget on day one because some guy on LinkedIn posted a rocket emoji.
Use an amount you can afford to learn with.
Watch the calls.
Listen to them.
Track what turns into real work.
Here Is My Take
ChatGPT Ads are worth watching.
They may become a strong way to reach homeowners while they are trying to solve a real problem.
But “new” does not mean “good.”
And “early” does not mean “profitable.”
Small contractors should learn now, get ready, and test with care.
You do not need to be first.
You need to be early enough to learn without being early enough to get robbed by your own excitement.
If you run a small home service company and want help deciding if ChatGPT Ads belong in your plan, book a call with us.
We will tell you if the answer is yes, no, or not yet.
